Additional Notes

  • The relationships between the lovers are quite different, Isabella believes in magic and has both great hope and jealous concern for her future with the more hedonistic Flavio, whereas Flaminia is a bit more pessimistic, and seems not to have high hopes for practical Orazio.
  • Similarly, there is an antagonistic relationship between Isabella and Pedrolino that involves dishonesty and trying to hurt each other’s feelings; Isabella appears to be taking out the pain of Flavio’s slights on his servant. This can be an amazing thing to work with, but if you do not embellish beyond the plot points it falls very flat.
  • This is one of the longer plays in the Scala collection, even before our added scenes. It seems likely that the intermezzi probably had the old twins doing musical numbers.
