Additional Notes

  • Some of the later comedies, such as “Isabella the Astrologer” have large casts, but among the early days, this play stands out as having the largest cast. Side note: this is the only play with the character Grillo (originally four scenes in act 1, we added some scenes later in the play).
  • The set would benefit from having at least part of the Mountebank’s wagon at one edge of the stage as a place for the trio to exit to, and to depart when Graziano exits in mid-Act III.
  • At the end of Act I, Graziano and Arlecchino give a sales pitch. This is something that your actors will want to work out and practice.
  • Graziano’s wagon is a nice touch for a troupe with the ability to make such a prop. It is a good place to store the parts of the stall. It really only matters as a plot point in scene 306, when its departure shows that Graziano is not coming back.
